Welcome to the The Keystone Academy Website providing excellence
for every learner

A brand new SEN Free School opening in September 2022 for up to 120 pupils aged 4-16 with a range of social, emotional and mental health difficulties.

Youth Engagement Schools Trust is delighted to have been selected to create a new special education provision in Shrewsbury. ‘The Keystone Academy’ will be a new type of education provision to add to the capacity the local authority already offers.

As a trust we are determined to secure excellence for all, and providing world class education and support to those who have previously failed in education, we are able to achieve this by continuously striving for the best; improving, innovating and reflecting. We all aspire to the highest standards of achievement. This includes, but is not limited to; educational accomplishment; the incredible passion that young people develop for learning; values; and inter-personal skills so that they can contribute positively to local and global communities.

Our Vision for The Keystone Academy is to work constantly to provide excellence for every student. With a highly-trained, specialised team, we will support the entire cohort’s needs, particularly focusing on those students with specialist neurodiversity needs; with an aspirational environment to recapture an often lost passion for learning and creativity we hope to capture new found curiosity and imagination to help all become the best versions of themselves.

‘Keystone’ represents far more than just a name for a school.  It neatly summarises our vision for the Academy, and expresses the ethos for education we strive to provide; being the centre support mechanism for our learners underpinned with an ethos focused on positive achievement and success at every stage. We will strive to provide a child centred approach to learning boosting core literacy, numeracy and life skills; while developing their personal, social and emotional skills; Leading to high quality academic and vocational achievement and positive post-16 destinations.

Nic Brindle – CEO

I am delighted to have been appointed as Headteacher at The Keystone Academy and am looking forward to taking up the position formally in January 2022.

I have been a teacher for 21 years, having taught the full age range from KS1-KS4 and more recently have been a leader in the Pupil Referral Unit in Blackpool.  For the last thirteen years in the PRU, I have thoroughly enjoyed working with wonderful young people and their families, all of whom have had such a variety of strengths and needs.  I am passionate about preparing young people with the skills to live a successful life and to realise their unique potential by supporting them to achieve their very best socially, emotionally and academically.

I am thrilled to be joining the team at The YES Trust and to have an opportunity to develop a school which will work in collaboration with the local authority to support and meet the needs of young people experiencing some form of neurodiversity, alongside their families.

Over recent years, I have been especially interested in seeking to understand children who haven’t yet been fully understood in school.  The Keystone Academy’s specialism in social, emotional and mental health needs and in particular, neurodiversity is exciting.  I believe that ‘all behaviour is a form of communication’ and as such I always strive to understand the bigger picture, working holistically with families and agencies wherever possible. The YES Trust’s vision to develop a school that becomes the figurative ‘keystone’ for children, their families and support services will be at the heart of my practice.  I am committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure the best opportunities and outcomes for all children in my care and as such, I’m genuinely looking forward to meeting the children, their families and getting to know the local community too.
